Biomedical Scientist

Biomedical Scientist

Biomedical scientists study how the body works so that they can help solve health care problems such as cancer, diabetes or obesity.

Most biomedical scientists work for universities or research institutions such as the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research (Wellington) or the Liggins Institute (Auckland). Others work in the private sector for companies that develop and manufacture medical treatments and devices.

They're different to medical laboratory scientists, who work in hospitals and private medical laboratories testing blood and tissue samples taken from patients and who need to have a specialist qualification in Medical Laboratory Science.

Pay rates depend on qualifications and experience:

  • Technicians and research associates usually earn around $35-55,000, rising to $55-75,000 with a Master’s degree
  • A PhD-qualified scientist may earn $75-95,000
  • Those who manage to secure a permanent position and lead a research team may earn $130,000 or more

Key tertiary qualifications for biomedical scientists include:

  • Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Genetics, Physiology or Molecular Biology
  • Bachelor of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering
  • A Master’s degree or PhD is generally required for work in a research role

Recommended school subjects:

  • Biology
