ICT Support Professional

ICT support professionals help other people – colleagues, clients and customers – use computer software and hardware, and may be involved in making sure networks and websites are working well. They generally work in teams with other IT professionals, such as systems engineers, network analysts, and web and database administrators, and often move into those roles with more experience and on-the-job training.

As an ICT support professional you might be involved in:

  • Setting up new computers, installing software and granting access to the network
  • Helping people to use mobile computing devices and sync them with their desktop computer
  • Trouble shooting computer problems
  • Routine network and security tasks, such as backing up servers and maintaining activity logs
  • Providing support to customers using your company's software products

ICT support professionals are employed by almost all medium to large businesses and organisations, from schools and universities to banks, large retailers and digital technology companies.

Working in ICT support is a good way to get into the industry, and after five years most people have moved on to another role, such as network engineer, computer security specialist or ICT trainer.

ICT support professionals generally earn:

  • $30-60,000 depending on the role and their qualifications and experience

Key tertiary qualifications include:

  • Diploma in Information Systems, Information Technology or Information and Communications Technology
  • Bachelor of Information Systems, Information Technology or Computer Systems
  • On-the-job training and industry certification is very important in ICT support roles
